Extreme weather and high temperatures can be dangerous for retirement age adults, even though the sunshine is enjoyable during the summer months. Engaging in activities when it’s hot should be done carefully and thoughtfully. You can stay engaged and on the move, however, while keeping cool.
Yes, the weather is a bit chilly right now in many areas. This doesn’t mean, however, that summer won’t get here eventually. When it does, how will you pass your time? It’s important to stay mentally and physically active, no matter what the season. We are going to take a look at some summer activities for elders to make the warmer weather more enjoyable.
Cold Treats
In hot weather, there’s nothing like a cold treat. Ice cream and summer go hand in hand. Don’t forget, July 21 is National Ice Cream Day!
Safety Outside
The weather may be warm, so it’s important to stay safe if you venture outdoors. Remember your sunscreen and to stay in the shade whenever possible. Vitamin D is offered by the sun, so it’s highly beneficial, too (as long as you don’t overdo it).
Read a Book or Watch a Movie
In an air-conditioned atmosphere, you can get together with family and friends – or be alone, if you prefer – and watch a movie. If you want some quiet time, read a book. You may even consider getting a book club together. If you are self-isolating, book clubs get together online today, thanks to any number of virtual visitation options.
Game Night (or Day)
Card games and board games are competitive, fun ways for older adults to socialize and stay engaged. If the weather is a little cooler, corn hole and other outdoor games are not particularly strenuous but still offer a bit of exercise and lots of enjoyment.
Stay Cool but Active
If the weather is hot, stay cool by doing water aerobics or swimming. This will also help you stay fit. For individuals with stiff joints or arthritis, low-impact water-based activities during the summer can be highly beneficial.
Other activities that can be done in an air-conditioned room are balloon volleyball, chair tai chi, and yoga.
Arts and Crafts
Fine motor skills can be developed, and emotions expressed, by working on a craft. Retirement-age adults can increase motivation, concentration, and confidence by creating a product.
Reminiscing
Reduce stress and engage in therapeutic communication by reminiscing with others about past summers. Remember that trip to the amusement park? What about a family vacation that was particularly enjoyable? If memory is a problem, pull out pictures and postcards to assist with the memory process.
Cooking
One of the great things about summer, at least where cooking is concerned, is that fresh produce is readily available and more cost-efficient. Retirement-age adults can receive much of the nutrition they need by cooking with fresh vegetables and fruits. What’s more, a creative outlet and a sense of purpose are provided by the therapeutic activity of cooking.
