You don’t need to be a marathon runner in order to benefit from a stretching routine. As we age, we are more likely to experience tight muscles. These can pull on our bones, making us feel stiff and experience aches. Stretching for older adults brings about a number of benefits such as an increase in blood flow, an increase in range of motion, improved mood, and reduced stress. You can stretch daily or when you are feeling sore, tight, or stiff. Read on to learn more about the daily life stretches older adults can do!
Arm Opener
This will help to stretch your arms, chest, and shoulders. First, stand with your feet apart and interlace your hands behind your back. Then, let your hands fall down near the tailbone with the knuckles pointed down. Look ahead and keep your arms loose. Then gradually lift your arms as far as your tailbone as possible.
Chin Drop
This stretch will help with neck pain. Place your arms in front of you with the elbows and palms touching. Place your palms on top of your head then gently drop your chin. You will feel the stretch in your neck and shoulders.
Hula Hoop
This stretch helps to increase mobility in your hips. Stand with your feet together and place your hands on your hips. Then, circle your hips five times clockwise, then switch to the other direction and continue with five circles counter-clockwise.
Yo-Yo
This stretch helps you to improve your posture and align your spine. Stand with your feet apart and turn your toes out slightly. Then, interlace your hands with your palms facing outwards and bring them to your chest. Hold the position as you twist from side to side.
Quad Pull
The quad pull will stretch your thighs and improve your mobility. Stand with your feet together first. Then place your arms at your sides. Make use of a wall or table for support then put your right hand on top of it. Balance on your right leg while you bring your left leg back until you are able to grab it using your left hand. Maintain a straight line from your head to your tailbone with the chest lifted.
Take note that stretching should not lead to any pain. If you experience any pain, stop doing the stretch. If you have any questions, consult your doctor before starting your new stretching routine.
