Generally speaking, there are two types of obstacles that stop people from retiring: finances and emotions. Do you feel like you’re ready for retirement? Figuring out the precise time to retire can be difficult for some individuals. A certain age is aimed for by some people: between 62 and 65 years of age. Others want to make sure they have a retirement account that has at least $1 million in it. That’s their financial retirement goal.
Though there are numerous signs someone is ready for retirement, they don’t all revolve around saved money or age. Additionally, they need to be emotionally ready.
Are You All Set To Retire?
You might be ready for retirement if…
- You have something to occupy your time other than a job.
- You enjoy having a social network.
- You have health insurance.
- To cope with emergencies, you have a plan in place.
- You have taken care of all your debts.
- You are prepared financially.
Something Other Than a Job
Chances are, at least five days a week, you went to a job. Once you retire, that job won’t be there anymore. Do you have something to occupy your time in retirement?
Social Networking
Now that you’re not going to your job anymore, you’ll want to form a new community. Social networking can be particularly useful here. You will miss the people you work with less if you are part of a social networking community.
Health Insurance
Before you officially retire, make sure, if you had health insurance through your place of employment, you get a new policy in place. Remember that Medicare doesn’t cover everything (for those 65 and over), so you may want supplemental insurance or Medicare Advantage.
Money for Emergencies
Emergency expenses must be managed, so you’ll need to know you have strategies in place to cover them as well as everyday bills. This can include everything from unexpected medical bills and major home repairs to an investment bottoming out.
Debt Elimination
It’s best to eliminate any and all outstanding loans/debts before you retire. Doing this will ensure that the money you have, rather than going toward debt, can be applied to bills, emergencies, and general living expenses (and enjoyment).
Financial Preparation
To make sure you’re financially prepared for retirement, figure out what your daily, monthly, and annual costs will be. You need to be assured the income generated by Social Security, pensions, and savings will be sufficient to meet your needs.
