Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, marks the day of all Black people in the United States being free, thanks to the practice of slavery being outlawed nationwide. Thus, similarly to Independence Day, everyone should take the opportunity to celebrate this day that symbolizes the freedom of the American people.
#1 – Host a Barbecue Cookout
What better way to honor a historic day like Juneteenth than with good food? Enjoying a bountiful meal with your entire community will not only serve as a great way to encourage festivities but also strengthen your bonds as a retirement community. To make your meal extra significant, feature tons of red foods on the menu! Red is Juneteenth’s symbolic color that represents strength and resilience in bondage. There’s nothing like washing down barbecued meats with a freshly-cut watermelon! Of course, great company in the form of your fellow independent living community residents makes the experience twice as enjoyable.
#2 – Support Black-owned Business
You can’t change the past, but you can show your support for the black community now and in the future! Supporting a local black-owned business is one of the best ways to honor Juneteenth. Black-owned businesses show the fruits of independent black individuals and families’ efforts to contribute back to their community. It also testifies to how black people are valued in our current society and deserve to work on their own terms and be their own bosses. Visiting your local black-owned business this Juneteenth to show your support.
#3 – Donate to Relevant Organizations
What better way to honor Juneteenth than to donate to organizations that are supportive of black communities. By donating to non-profit organizations that your beliefs align with, you can contribute to a cause you’re genuinely passionate about. Making a group donation with your friends from your independent living community is a simple yet significant way to show your support for Juneteenth as a movement as a group. Here are some charities we recommend:
- Black Girls Code: provides technology education for African-American girls, to strengthen their presence and representation in STEM circles.
- Black Girl Ventures: creates access to capital for aspiring black female entrepreneurs to get head starts on their businesses.
- Campaign Zero: pushes for policymakers to work towards reducing police violence
#4 – Attend Juneteenth Events
Juneteenth events are specifically designed to educate and highlight the message of this important holiday to the general public. Physically participating in such events is an effective way to show your support at greater length. For us in America, there is no shortage of Juneteenth events to attend. Feel free to research the various Juneteenth events at your local parks, restaurants, and other venues for any activities that interest you!
