In some areas and in some ways, the isolation caused by the coronavirus is lessening – for the time being, at least. It might sound like heaven to some, to kick back, stay home, and spend the day watching Netflix. But self-isolation and the lifestyle changes that accompany it can be difficult for others.
Activities for the elderly in isolation can be enjoyable, however. While still engaging in social distancing, if necessary, along with healthy, vaccinated family and close friends, there are numerous activities older adults can partake in – or do alone. Even when temporarily saying goodbye to “normal” life, these activities can make things a bit easier.
Let’s look at some of the things retirement age adults can participate in to stay mentally and physically engaged and healthy.
Brush Up on Your Culinary Skills
Some people absolutely love to cook. If you’re one of them, find some new recipes online and experiment a little bit. Have a friend or family member over to test out your new dish and give you some feedback. Use healthy foods high in vitamins and minerals, whenever possible.
Find New Hobbies
You may not be able to participate in some of your former hobbies or pastimes, but that doesn’t mean you can’t find a new one. If you feel comfortable, get a few friends together and share a new pastime with them. Think book clubs, cooking classes, dance classes, arts and crafts, and more.
Do the Cleaning/Organizing You’ve Been Meaning to Get to
Surely, there is a box, drawer, closet, or even an entire room you’ve been meaning to get to. Organizing any of these will help get your home a little tidier and leave you with a good feeling. Put a couple of boxes together to be picked up by your local thrift store, if they will do so.
If organization isn’t at the top of your list, cleaning might be. You can stretch it out for days at a time if it’s a big job and you can only do so much before feeling worn out.
Exercise
Exercise doesn’t have to mean heavy, strenuous workouts. It can be a simple walk in the park. It can even include a “sit and be fit” regime. At least 30 minutes a day, try to get some kind of exercise. It won’t burn up a large chunk of time, but it will certainly increase physical health. It may even promote mental well-being at the same time.
Get Together Virtually
The beauty of FaceTime, Skype, and other methods of virtual visitation have been introduced to millions of people. You can now check in with your kids, grandkids, friends, and more via the Internet. By using your smartphone, iPad, laptop, or desktop computer, you can participate in all sorts of fun activities “together.”
