Depression is an epidemic. It is funny how in a world where there is an increasingly large number of ways to contact people, we are becoming more dissonant and disconnected from each other. Research shows that depression is more common in women than men, but it affects both populations significantly. However, there are ways to help combat depression in your loved ones and help them improve themselves mentally. Here are 5 ways older adults can try to fight depression.
Attending Social Events Geared at Older Adults
One of the best ways to fight depression is to socialize. Feelings of loneliness and isolation are the root causes of depression so if one joins a club or interest group, they can productively make friends and spend time with them. When you do an activity with someone who is also interested in said activity, this increases feelings of belongingness. Older adults could also consider hosting social gatherings like book clubs, or weekly movie nights. This helps increase feelings of happiness while allowing older adults to make friends.
Eating Healthy
Believe it or not, but there are foods that have been proven by scientific studies to improve the lives of those who suffer from depression. Fiber-rich foods and vitamins can have positive health impacts on one’s mood according to Dr. Shawn Talbott. Conversely, junk food such as sweets and foods high in fat can provide temporary mental relief but will ultimately not be good for the older adults’ mind or body: much like a drug, it is a temporary high. Instead, one should aim to eat proteins, vegetables and fruits, and tofu. Turkey meat has a chemical that can help produce dopamine, the “happiness” chemical in our brains.
Find and Connect with Support Groups
Aging can be a difficult thing to accept, and one should always try to connect with others who are going through the same thing. Empathy can help one be a more understanding and accepting person and an older adult who is supported by friends who are going through the same experience become more accepting and open. By connecting with others, this relieves symptoms of depression and loneliness.
Exercising or Engaging in Physical Activity
We know that exercising might not be the easiest thing, especially if one has gone a long time without it. However, when you exercise, your brain produces dopamine, the “happiness” chemical, and gives you a sustainable high. Though starting is the hardest part, the pay-off for exercising is great. A study at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Centre showed that seniors who engaged in physical activity regularly reported increased positive moods and lower levels of depression. Taking advantage of warm weather, feeling sunshine on the skin and warm weather can also alleviate symptoms of depression.
