The older you get, you may notice more and more friends moving away, passing away, or just drifting away. This can lead to isolation and loneliness in today’s retirees. Meeting other seniors and making new friends can be more difficult for some than for others. If it’s too hard, people may tend not to try at all. But even if you socialize just a few hours a day, you’ll be less likely to get depressed, and you’ll feel healthier, happier, and less stressed than if you isolate yourself.
How do you establish new friendships? Try some of these suggestions to meet other retirees.
Gardening Clubs
For people of all ages, one rewarding, healthy hobby many enjoy is gardening. Even if it’s just a little patch of earth outside your residence, that’s good enough. If you have more room and can handle the physical demands of a larger garden, go for it. If you can get a neighborhood garden together, you’re bound to meet people who enjoy some of the same things you do and make new friends.
Social Networking
Even if people are homebound, they can get together today through social networking. You can “zoom” with a bunch of friends, or just stay in touch on Facebook and other social media sites. Talk to the grandkids and see them at the same time on your computer, without having to leave the safety of your residence.
Hit the Golf Course
Play 9 holes, 18, or hang out at the clubhouse. Take a cart if walking from hole to hole is a little too much for you. You’re getting out, breathing in some fresh air, getting a little exercise, and meeting up with friends. What could be better?
Attend a Fitness Class
There are often exercise classes tailored to those in their golden years offered at health clubs and local gyms. Meet new people and stay in shape through water aerobics, light weight training, cycling, Pilates, and yoga.
Cruises and Travel Clubs
Are there faraway places to visit on your bucket list? Cruise lines and travel clubs frequently cater to retirees. While on vacation, you will be able to participate in music, dancing, dining, exercise classes and more. You’ll have fun, see new sites, and meet other people.
Community Centers
There may be a Senior Community Center in your town. If so, it’s a great place to play some cards, exercise, or take a class. You might just want to talk about the latest goings-on over coffee with others your age. Frequently, cookouts, dances, movies, and parties are just a few of the activities that take place.
