Experts in the field of the human brain and how it works are constantly in search of information. Through studies, they’ve come to realize you can boost your brain health, and possibly even help prevent dementia, by making certain lifestyle choices. In other words, how you live your life could have everything to do with how long your brain stays healthy and functional!
Consider developing the following habits to increase brain health.
Exercise and Then Some
Stretching and toning are nice, but more strenuous exercise may lead to longer cognitive function. Lift weights, walk, jog, and do light calisthenics – whatever your body is capable of doing safely. Mix it up whenever you can. Walk one day, ride a bike the next day, lift weights the next. Keep it fresh.
Sleep Is Vital
You’ve likely heard this a million times, but it’s true. You have to get enough sleep if you’re going to remain healthy – that applies to both your body and mind. Naps are good. They can be very important. But taking a nap earlier in the day is better than taking one later. Late naps may discourage sleeping at night.
Easy on the Sugar
Don’t drain your brain with simple carbs and foods rich in sugar.
Red Wine In Reasonable Amounts
While some diets (such as the one you will see referred to below) prefer you limit red wine. While keeping it at a reasonable level, feel free to indulge occasionally. It can help your brain and your heart, according to studies.
Additional Brain Boosters
- Learn how to do something new (a new hobby, a foreign language, play an instrument, etc.)
- Eat dark chocolate (this should not be a burden for most people)
- Eat on the lines of a Mediterranean diet (limit your red meat and red wine but eat plenty of fish, nuts, legumes, whole grains, healthy fats, vegetables, and fruits)
- Color, sketch, or doodle
- Keep up with tasks/to-do lists around the house, yard, etc.
- Take a quick nap (earlier in the day is better)
- Do crossword puzzles and participate in other games
- Throw a party
- Practice yoga
- Dance
- Check with your doctor first, but if you’re in pain, experts suggest using ibuprofen to reduce inflammation
- Keep stress to a minimum
- Concentrate on one thing at a time rather than multitask
One Last Thing
The important thing to do is to take charge. It’s your brain – get enough sleep, take your medications, brush your teeth, exercise, eat a balanced diet, and stay hydrated. Do all of this so your body and brain last a long time, in good health.
